Back on the grid

I’m back. OK, I didn’t actually go anywhere but I’ve been super busy. In fact, so busy I have neglected this blog. The exciting news is that all that time has been spent on launching my business. ta da! Cue the trumpets and bugles.

OK, so it’s not the next Amazon or Google. In fact, I have no desire for that to happen – let’s just be clear. Over the course of my funemployment, I realised that I didn’t want to return to a corporate job. Sure, there’s a lot to be said for a regular salary, career progression and the peer support that comes from working in a large organisation. But with that comes politics, pressure and irrepressible anxiety.

So now I’m going it alone. I still want to do great work and I know that I will. But I need a break from all of that corporate pressure. I want to be my own boss and choose who I work with (and who I don’t).

This is a big leap into the great unknown. Massive. Enormous. But, I’m OK with that because my gut says it’s the right thing to do. I’m no fool and am sure that there will be some turbulent times. Having to hustle for work doesn’t come naturally to me, but I know my skills remain relevant so I’m learning to back myself. I’ve become a networking fiend while I build awareness about my company and drum up business leads and am on a steep learning curve. Like, vertical steep.

I see this as a challenge. As with other goals I’ve set myself – deadlifting 100kg, eating vegetarian and taking long hikes through the outback – this will be just as much about the journey as it is about the destination.
